Abstract

|
An artificial insemination technique for obtaining pregnant does in rabbit teratogenicity studies is described. The procedure described here is much easier and simpler than natural coatings in rabbits. Semen was collected from bucks by using an artificial vagina filled with hot water (50¡É). After semen collection, each doe was injected intraveneously info the auricular vein with a single dose of human chorionic gonadotrophin (25 I.U.). Then collected semen was examined microscopically and diluted 10¡¿. The semen mixture(0.5§¢) was deposited in the vagina with a pipette. There were no significant differences between mated and artificially inseminated rabbits in terms of reproduction and developmental results. The advantages of the technique presented here are as follows: the time, hands and cost requirement¢¥s can be effectively reduced, and the mating of rabbits can be controlled easily. The artificial insemination technique established in our laboratory was found to be an useful tool for obtaining pregnant does in rabbit teratogenicity studies.
